In this video I’m showing Windows 7 running on an Apple M1 Mac (base model Mac mini: 8GB RAM, 256GB storage) using UTM on the public beta of macOS Ventura. This is a quick, practical setup walkthrough—not a full deep-dive—so you can get from “nothing installed” to a working Windows 7 VM without overthinking it. I cover where to grab UTM (direct download vs the paid Mac App Store version) and the other must-have piece: the Spice Guest Tools ISO. Inside UTM, I go through the settings that actually matter: enabling UEFI boot, picking the Skylake Client CPU profile (since it plays nicest with Windows 7), allocating sane resources (I used 4GB RAM and 4 cores), and setting up drives correctly (mount your Windows 7 ISO, then create a separate IDE drive—around 64GB—for the install target). After install, I show proof it’s working: normal desktop behavior, right-clicking, and internet access—though it’s slow and a bit janky because we’re doing ARM-to-x64 emulation and the graphics drivers are never going to be “right.” I also demonstrate swapping the mounted ISO to Spice Guest Tools, explain why you should install those first (they’re key for networking), and I check DXDiag so you can see the “Standard VGA” limitations and the 1024x768 resolution cap.
