I was scouring through GitHub (like I’ve been doing lately) and found a bunch of projects that let you “try” an operating system right in the browser. None of these are full, real OS installs, but they’re a really nice way to dip your toe—or even your nail—into an interface and see how the UI feels. In this video I walk through Windows 11 Web (the Vercel one), a Windows XP web build, a macOS Monterey-style web mock, a no-code Windows 11 Webflow version, and then I cap it off with an Ubuntu web project that honestly surprised me. With the Windows 11 Web project, I focused on the design details: the Start menu smoothness, the fact that Search is basically the same panel, what actually works (widgets view, quick settings toggles, right-click), and what doesn’t (Task View, Settings, a lot of app placeholders). The WinXP one is just fun—super smooth window dragging, Minesweeper, Winamp, and even a fully working Paint inside the web experience. But the biggest takeaway? Ubuntu Web felt the most “alive.” The browser can load real sites, Terminal works, there’s a contact flow, and even a calculator interaction works. If you’re UI-obsessed like me, these projects are pure inspiration—and a reminder that people are doing amazing work recreating OS experiences for the web.
