In this video I take a pretty meaty look at the newly redesigned Voice Recorder—now officially called Sound Recorder—on Windows 11. I start by showing the Windows Insider blog post and the Microsoft Store situation, because right now this is a Dev Channel Insider preview. If you’re on Dev, you can basically just hit Library > Check for updates (or search “Voice Recorder”) and it’ll update automatically the moment you launch it. The big win for me is that Microsoft finally addressed the most annoying part of the old app: changing your microphone. Before, I’d be stuck diving into Windows Settings just to swap input devices, which was super convoluted (and Windows loves resetting mics). Now I can switch mics right inside the app. Visually, the new waveform is a huge upgrade too—no more weird pulsing circle, it’s proper Fluent-style audio waves, plus you can pause, drop markers, jump to those markers, share, rename, and even “Show in folder.” That last bit is a small detail, but I love that it actually respects file management and updates filenames live. In Settings, I can pick formats (m4a, mp3, wma, flac, opus, etc.), choose audio quality, and flip light/dark/system without restarting. My main critique: I still want basic editing—trim/cut, mark in/out to make sub-clips, and simple gain/decibel control. Microsoft is on a good roll here; it just needs that last step to be truly complete.
