In this video, I’m back with another concept critique—this time checking out Concept Central’s updated “Windows 12” concept (posted June 26, 2022). I do what I always do: watch it through once, then scrub back and nitpick the details with a designer’s eye. Right out of the gate, the logo bugs me because it’s way too round—like it’s trying too hard to be “friendly” in a way that doesn’t feel very Windows. From there, I get into the layout decisions: the taskbar is split into sections and the Start button is locked to the bottom-left. On ultrawide monitors (like what I use), that’s genuinely annoying—I prefer centered Start because wider screens make that corner feel far away. The Start menu itself is familiar, but the big win here is the widgets: they’re actually interactive, and the concept shows you pulling them off and sticking them onto the desktop like useful “stickers.” Microsoft, please—this is the kind of widget implementation I want. My favorite part is the utility pane that shows device battery status clearly (mouse, headphones, keyboard, etc.). Bluetooth already exposes that info, so Windows should stop hiding it behind tiny icons and just make it readable. There are still small alignment and “too bubbly” UI moments, but overall it’s top-notch concept work with a few design choices I’d rethink.
