What happens when you combine a chipmunk and a chickadee? In this creature build, I design and needle felt a woodland griffin inspired by two ordinary backyard animals. Using armature wire, wool roving, custom fur blends, and handmade feathered wings, I shape a fantasy creature that feels believable, like something nature might have designed. From sculpted wool feet to layered feather construction, this mixed media build explores how simple materials like wool and wire can become something almost alive. 📍Where you can find us: Business Email: Magneticnerdsent@gmail.com TikTok: Mythical Makers Workshop Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mythical.makers.workshop/ Facebook: Mythical Makers Workshop 🎶 Music is from Epidemicsound https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/gfexzx/ 🧰 SUPPLIES we used: - Black felt - Pipe cleaners - 28 gauge wire - Sculpture wire - Sculpey - Two glass beads - Black thread - Tacky glue - Black acrylic paint - Vallejo game colors Heavy skin tone, smoky ink - Heat n bond ultra hold no sew  - Iron - Core wool  - Roving wool natural - wool roving corriedale in Black, light gray, white,  - Merino Wool Roving in tangerine and caramel 🔗LINKS we used: Helen Winters Textile Art https://youtu.be/SpPZ5zBXUIQ?si=sAg1MR4D0I-BcTCR Here’s where I got most of my wool for needle felting Over the years. About This Video

In this build, I asked a very important question: what if a chipmunk had wings? So I mashed up two totally normal backyard animals—a chipmunk and a chickadee—and turned them into a believable little woodland griffin. I start with an armature (wire, pipe cleaners, the usual chaos), then build up the body with core wool and roving until it looks like something nature could’ve accidentally invented in a tree hollow somewhere. The fun part is pushing the realism while still letting it stay fantasy. I needle felt sculpted wool feet, blend custom fur colors (because “one-bag brown” never looks right), and then make feathered wings with layered construction so they read like actual bird wings instead of flat craft foam vibes. The big takeaway is that wool and wire can feel weirdly alive if you take your time with structure first, then texture second—fur direction, color transitions, and those little details like eyes and shading. It’s mixed media, but it’s still the same goal: make it look like it could blink at you and scamper off with your snacks.
