If you’ve been thinking, “What happened to my sweet, cooperative toddler?” I made this video for you. In my toddler classroom (and in real life at home), I see this shift all the time—especially around 2.5 years old into the young 3s. It can feel like your easy-going child suddenly got “hard,” but what I want you to hear is: this is developmentally normal, and it’s actually a stage worth celebrating. In this video I walk through four big reasons this age can be challenging: imagination, the fully developed will, the shift toward being a more “conscious worker,” and a huge explosion of language. Their imagination doesn’t just show up as cute pretend play—it also shows up as them imagining 80 other things they’d rather do than put on shoes. Their will is real (and we want it!), but it means we have to adjust how we collaborate when they don’t have a choice about something. They also start making little plans—what they want to work on, what they’re “in the mood” for—and interrupting that plan can bring big energy. And finally, with more language comes more negotiation (yes, even about cream of wheat). My goal is to help you feel more patient, more empathetic, and better prepared to change your strategies for this older toddler stage.
