In this video, I’m answering the big beginner question: “What should I put on a Montessori toddler shelf?” I’m here in my Montessori toddler classroom, and I walk you through a simple shelf set-up that can absolutely stand alone and still keep your child engaged, happy, and working toward those Montessori goals of freedom, independence, creativity, and overall development. Honestly, if you have one little shelf, a basket of good books, a basket of instruments, the great outdoors, and a loving, patient adult—you’re in a really good place. I teach four categories to include on just one toddler shelf. First is “using two hands together” (open/close containers like spice jars, paper tearing, and working with non-hardening clay). Second is practical life (a sponge for cleanup, a dusting cloth, and a basket of floor towels for spills—yes, they may spill on purpose for a bit, and that’s usually a phase). Third is art expression (half-sheet paper with quality crayons, collage with glue or a glue stick, and clipboard drawing with colored pencils). Fourth is developmental aids (shape sorter, beading with safe-sized beads, peg boards with isolation of difficulty, and simple puzzles). With 12 ideas across four categories, you can rotate one from each category and create 81 combinations—keeping the shelf fresh based on your observation.
