About This Video

In this video, I’m sharing practical, real-life strategies to help you stop saying “good job” so often that it becomes meaningless. I walk you through why “good job” can be problematic when we rely on it too much: it’s subjective (different adults mean different things), it can make kids dependent on external evaluation, it limits vocabulary, and it can even turn little ones into “praise addicts” who start doing things just to please us instead of building internal motivation. Then I give you simple Montessori-aligned alternatives you can start using right away. First, sometimes the best strategy is saying nothing—if your child is content and not looking for validation, they’re already validating themselves. When they do look to you, you can respond with admiration (“You worked on that a long time”), gratitude (“Thank you for helping”), celebration (“Congratulations!”), and honest pride (“I’m proud of you… you must be proud of yourself too”). The goal is to support confidence and intrinsic motivation, so your child learns to recognize their own effort and accomplishment—whether or not an adult is there cheering them on.
