WHAT DOES MY BABY REALLY NEED? (BABY ESSENTIALS THAT AREN'T) THE OBSTACLES TO COORDINATED MOVEMENT

444 views· 17 likes· 8:46· Aug 27, 2021

More parents are asking “What does my baby really need?” Babies are born in the sensitive period to movement and need environments and adult support which enables them to develop the coordinated movement they will need throughout their lives. Cheers to freedom movement! This is good news for those practicing family minimalism as part of their Montessori at home life! If a Johnny jump up, exersaucer, swing, walker, bouncer, or even a crib are on your baby registry list, cross it off! There is sound developmental research on gross and fine motor development to support scratching these baby contraptions and containers off your list. In addition to adult support, your baby only needs a few things to follow their inner teacher’s instruction to move, be active, slither, wriggle, turn over, scoot, crawl and finally walk! Be sure to visit Raising Littles to see a real life example of how a crib can be avoided as well! https://youtu.be/AT-6sN130HA Chantal has other great videos also! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6LS3oKPG6P-oI1fOpJYgcg As Dr. Montessori said, one of our primary responsibilities as adults supporting our baby’s healthy development is to remove obstacles to development. The support needed for your child’s coordinated movement is simple. I hope this video helps you trust your instincts that baby’s don’t need a lot of stuff! #familyminimalism #montessorimovement #babyneeds Time Stamps: 00:00 What does my baby really need? About This Video

In this video I’m answering a question I hear more and more: “What does my baby really need?” And my honest, Montessori answer is: very, very little—nothing but you and what you can give them. I focus on one of the greatest gifts we can offer from birth: freedom of movement. Babies are born in the sensitive period of movement (Dr. Montessori described sensitive periods like a “light shining” on a specific developmental work), and their inner teacher is driving them to slither, wriggle, roll, scoot, crawl, and eventually walk. I share what I actually recommend for supporting coordinated movement: a safe, open space—often as simple as a clean sheet on the floor. If you need more padding, you can use a movement mat or nap mat with a cover, but the point is the same: give your baby room to move. Then I walk through common “baby essentials” that are really obstacles—Johnny jump ups, exersaucers, swings, walkers, bouncers, and yes, even cribs—because they restrict movement, reduce practice time for gross and fine motor skills, and often move a baby’s body through space in ways they can’t control. I also talk about safety (create “yes spaces”), the risks of overstimulating vestibular input, how adults can become dependent on containers, and physical concerns like posture, tippy-toe standing, pelvic alignment, core strength, and even flat head issues from too much time in seats. My goal is to help you trust your instincts: babies don’t need a lot of stuff—they need freedom to move.
