In this video I take you right into my Montessori toddler classroom language area as I rotate our current language curriculum based on what my colleagues and I are observing in the children. I always remind adult learners that the most important language “object” is the adult—but I do love having beautiful, purposeful materials ready on the shelves. I show what’s on my language shelf in November 2023, what I’m switching out, and why certain works stay longer (like color tablets when children are still sorting out tricky colors like yellow vs. orange). You’ll see how I set up language mats for floor work, seasonal and cultural language cards (like Halloween vocabulary), and real-life vocabulary baskets—everything from groups of animals to people who use aids (mobility cane, walker, hearing aid, braces). I also share how we use the top shelf as an altar of remembrance for Día de los Muertos with simple, handleable items. Finally, I tour our two cozy reading corners and explain how I manage books (starting with just a few, then adding more as children learn to care for them). I also show our poetry and song cards, plus the sandpaper letters and sound game objects I rotate when toddlers start memorizing instead of truly listening for sounds.
