About This Video

In this live Practical Life chat, I’m sharing a simple checklist I use as a Montessori toddler guide and teacher trainer to help people “refresh and renew” their environments—whether that’s a classroom or a Montessori-at-home setup. I walk through what Practical Life really includes: care of self, care of the environment (inside and outside), food preparation, grace and courtesy, and even movement of furniture (toddlers love being able to move child-sized furniture independently). I also give you easy numbers to aim for so it feels doable: about two self-care activities your toddler can access anytime (like a tissue tray for nose-wiping or a simple shoe/boot cleaning setup), around three ways to care for the indoor environment (window washing, safe polishing, mirror cleaning), and about three outdoor contributions (broom/rake, weeding bucket, deadheading flowers). For food prep, I recommend two or three snack options your child can participate in preparing—something as simple as opening a fig bar, slicing a banana, or washing and plucking grapes. Along the way, I share practical setup tips: keep water work near the sink, turn down water pressure, use trays/baskets with edges, choose child-scaled materials with a “substance” feel, include a few breakable (but safe) items, and offer cleanup tools so toddlers can truly restore the space after spills.
