I’m really intentional about what I recommend because my co-teachers and I are using these materials with about 12 toddlers at a time, so if something holds up for us, I feel confident it’ll last in a home environment too. I’m focusing on items that are engaging, attractive to toddlers, and truly well-made—so you’re not wasting money on “Montessori” toys that don’t get used. I walk you through several favorite shops and the specific items that have proven to be good investments: a simple geoboard for two-hand coordination, a wingnut game (with a tip to grab extra wingnuts because they can wander off), beautifully made peg doll sets with realistic skin tones, and durable practical life textiles like aprons, placemats, sensory bags, and towel sets. I also share one of my favorite “small but mighty” tools—a scissor sleeve that helps toddlers treat scissors like the important tool they are. Finally, I show a few standout wooden materials, including lacing cards and a pig box that gets used constantly in my classroom. It’s a perfect example of an open-ended Montessori-friendly toy: toddlers get that satisfying “in and out” work, plus color matching, and older children use it creatively in their own ways.
