How we respond to a child’s “potty training accident” is about more than just wet or dirty pants. Truly gaining toileting independence, potty training and Montessori style positive potty learning isn't about tricks and strategies. It is about the relationship between the child and the trusted Montessori adult. When using Montessori positive potty learning/toileting independence philosophy we want to set a pattern of behavior with our children so that they know when they feel vulnerable, when they need to share an uncomfortable situation, we are there for them. The information I share in this video is the cornerstone to all potty training and Montessori style positive potty learning. I trust the message of this video will help you in your child's toileting independence, potty and Montessori style positive potty learning. When a child has wet him/herself that child is in a rather vulnerable situation. They are physically uncomfortable. They might be feeling a little emotionally uncomfortable. They are inconvenienced that they have to stop what they're doing to change themselves. Then they go to the adult who they love and trust. It is important to that child’s emotional development that we respond in a way that doesn't make them feel ashamed of what has happened. Children need adults who understand that this is a very natural process just like any other hygiene situation like a dirty face or a runny nose. Adults need to ensure they don’t respond in a way that would make the child feel ashamed or embarrassed. They need to know that in this situation and in future situations we have their back and will help them solve their problems. Otherwise, children may begin hiding when they have had a potty accident, avoiding the adult or develop other unhealthy habits. Having a plan of how you will respond, in advance, can help keep the potty-training process more positive and less stressful. I hope you find this video helpful and that when you're caught at times when you're feeling exasperated or feeling tired you are equipped to respond with positive comments and energy to support your child in positive potty learning.
