A Montessori teacher explains material to teach young children about real-life heroes, peacemakers, and what is important to your family or school culture. Children in our society are bombarded with images of famous people our culture idolizes. The good news is we can take the initiative and introduce people who we admire and look up to because they worked to make the world a better place. Enter peacemaker/real-life hero language cards. One small thing we can do as part of the overarching purpose of Montessori education or Montessori parenting, education for peace, is to introduce peacemakers to our children. In this video, I have a specific work I'm going to show you from my classroom. You make this material at home super easy and it serves as a talking point with your children, sending an indirect message about what your family values and the types of people you admire. Dr. Montessori, having survived two wars and been interned for a long period of time during WWII, held world peace as the ultimate goal of what would become known as the Montessori method. Today we can work together, parents and educators, remembering her teachings that preventing war is the work of politicians and establishing lasting peace is the work of education.
