Is your little girl bossy? Learn why & the best way to respond for toddler boy and girl development.

There are developmental reasons why your two or three-year-old girl (or boy) is "bossy". Miss Julie explains why little girls (and boys) appear to be bossing their parents, siblings, friends around. Adults might mistake "bossy" behavior for rudeness but really there are developmental reasons that little girls and boys begin to behave this way as toddlers and preschoolers. The reasons little girls and boys are "bossy" has to do with natural and important milestones of healthy development in your toddler. Adult interpretation that children as "bossing" parents, friends and family around is unfair. Instead, we can respond in a way that helps the child use their emerging leadership skills to improve the world! The problem with calling little girls bossy is that people only call little GIRLS bossy usually, even though little boys also bark orders, make demands, and tell grown-ups what they should be doing. Two and three year old boys aren't terrible or rude! What is really going is that about the age of 2 1/2 little girls and little boys "will" has clearly developed! And... little girls, in general, tend to be a little bit more articulate while expressing their will. Also, at 2 1/2, we see that the imagination of little girls and boys is really been activated and they're beginning to be able to abstract more. Part of this new skill is being able to imagine alternative realities and how things can be improved, All these emerging new skills are desirable. We want our child to have a strong sense of self! I'm on vacation from the classroom in August 2021 and will be using some of that time to challenge myself to get back to the "minutes" goal of Miss Julie's Montessori Minutes.
