About This Video

In this video, I’m sharing 16 things your toddler (or preschooler) gains when you bring Montessori practical life into your home routine. Back in my Montessori toddler teacher training, a primary teacher with 30+ years of experience told me, “Everything a child needs to learn can be taught through practical life.” And honestly—my own years in the classroom have only confirmed it. Practical life isn’t just about teaching a child to wash dishes or mop a floor (though yes, I want them to be able to do those things). It’s about giving them the power to make a mess, take a risk, and know they can restore the environment. I go through the benefits bullet-style, because they’re truly that straightforward: practical life supports language development (precision and expansion), sensorial experiences, sequencing, repetition and refinement of skills, and an understanding of how things work—including opportunities to self-correct mistakes. It also helps toddlers create external order during a time when their internal order is changing constantly. Beyond skills, practical life nurtures concentration (and as Dr. Montessori said, the child who concentrates is immensely happy), collaboration with trusted adults, independence, self-confidence, and healthy self-esteem. It builds security, encourages positive risk-taking, and supports the development of the will—because children get real practice making decisions about what to do and when to do it.
