In this video I put the brand new MacBook Pro 14 with M5 up against the iPad Pro with M5, because on paper they share the same chip name — but in real life they behave totally differently. The hardware story is mostly unchanged on the outside: the iPad Pro keeps the Tandem OLED Ultra Retina XDR display and the same premium design (plus Wi‑Fi 7 and the C1X modem on cellular), and the MacBook Pro keeps the great keyboard, Force Touch trackpad, Thunderbolt 4, and 120Hz mini‑LED ProMotion display. So I focused on what actually moves the needle: performance, sustained workloads, and the stuff you’ll feel. On the MacBook side, M5 is a GPU-led year. I saw big gains in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light (roughly 34–35% over M4, ~50% over M3) and strong results in real apps like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Blender — plus much faster SSD speeds than my M3 machines (around 6,745 MB/s read and 7,218 MB/s write). The iPad Pro tells a different story: performance uplift over the M4 iPad was basically a wash on GPU in my testing, and you can tell Apple prioritized efficiency and AI rather than raw graphics horsepower. My takeaway: if you’re on an iPad Pro M4, don’t get jealous — you won’t notice much. But if you’re on an M3 (or older) MacBook Pro and your workflow hits the GPU, the MacBook Pro 14 M5 is absolutely worth looking at.
