A little over a week ago at the Equip Expo, I kept hearing the same thing from friends: “You’ve gotta see this hybrid mower technology.” So in this video I dug into what makes this system different, because it’s not just an engine spinning a generator like a lot of “hybrids” out there. Hydro-Gear walked me through a true hybrid setup where a smaller engine can help drive the deck while also charging the battery, and you can run it in three modes: full EV, hybrid mode, or power mode. The big takeaway for me is flexibility and real-world efficiency. In hybrid mode, the mower can run the electric deck until the battery hits a low cutoff, then it automatically fires the engine to charge back up and shuts off again at the high cutoff—so you’re not babysitting it. They’re also chasing lower fuel use by running a smaller horsepower engine at lower RPM, and for commercial guys the quiet early-morning HOA work is a real advantage since you can run full EV for about an hour. Then when the grass is thick, wet, and heavy, power mode stacks engine + electric so you can “plow through it” with big horsepower to the deck. I also show a Wright prototype where this tech is implemented on a real chassis, and that’s where it starts to feel like the future is actually getting close.
