Check this out—today I put the new Milwaukee M18 HOTSHOT jump starter through real-world tests on two vehicles with dead batteries: a 5.3L V8 and a 3.6L V6. What makes this thing different is the new-to-world capacitor tech. Instead of relying on an internal battery that you charge overnight (and then maybe get a couple jumps), the HOTSHOT uses your M18 battery to charge internal capacitors and then dumps major power into the start. Milwaukee claims up to 70 jumps off a single 5.0Ah M18 battery, and I wanted to see how it behaves when the battery voltage is down around 5 volts. I also go over the stuff that actually matters in the field: the clamps (these are excellent—good teeth, good alignment, they lock on way better than the old cheap cable style), the short leads that keep everything organized, and the built-in light modes—including an SOS pattern I haven’t seen on other jump packs. Later in the video I show the override feature for super-dead batteries (around 1.5V or less) and talk about why this is a big deal if you’ve ever dealt with parasitic draw. I’ve had the “not enough power” situation where the ignition key locks up—this capacitor setup is exactly the kind of solution that keeps you from getting stranded.
