The Sony FX3 is literally over four years old, and with firmware 7.00 it suddenly got interesting again. In this video I walk you through what’s new, how I’m updating it (I’d go with the Sony Creators’ App because for me it’s the safest and easiest way), and why a few of these changes actually make day-to-day shooting quicker. The headline feature is the new “Big 6” home screen, which you can toggle with the C4 / trash button once you switch the S&Q mode setting to Fixed/Variable. From there, I can tap-to-change the stuff I’m constantly touching: FPS (including the new variable S&Q behaviour), ISO/exposure index, shutter angle, iris, monitoring LUT, and white balance. I also point out a couple of smaller but genuinely useful quality-of-life updates: the camera now shows remaining record time per card (instead of a combined total), and Sony added more anamorphic de-squeeze options (1.5x and 1.6x on top of 1.3x and 2.0x). On top of that, you can add ND filter density into the metadata, which is neat for keeping notes consistent in post. And the big one for Resolve people like me: FX3 can now output Blackmagic RAW over HDMI to a Blackmagic Video Assist. I can’t demo it here because I don’t own the Video Assist yet, but it’s a very welcome alternative to ProRes RAW (which DaVinci Resolve doesn’t really support). Overall, it’s not massive, but I’m really happy Sony is still updating this camera.
