I’m talking about the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II — a lens I had on loan from Sony Poland (not sponsored), and honestly… I’m pretty sad I had to return it. In this video I break down what makes it, in my opinion, the best standard zoom for Sony full-frame if you want that classic 24–70mm range with f/2.8, pro build, and proper usability. I go through the size/weight changes versus the older GM and also compare it to what I’ve used for ages, like the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. What I love most is how “complete” it feels in the hand: the smooth/tight zoom switch (so I can basically lock a focal length like a prime), the aperture ring with de-click for video, the programmable buttons, and the overall weather sealing (I used it in London rain and in the Tatra mountains with loads of moisture). Autofocus is just insane — four linear XD motors, super snappy and accurate — plus the close focus distances are genuinely useful for detail shots. Image quality is the part that blows my mind: sharp across the frame, beautiful bokeh that feels very prime-like, and it handles backlight with minimal flaring/ghosting. But yeah… there’s one big issue, and it’s the price. At around $2,300 it’s a serious decision: amazing investment for pros who’ll make money with it, but hard to justify if you’re a hobbyist who can get “pretty similar effects” for a lot less.
