About This Video

I wanted to test a simple idea: what if your smart home had a “router” the same way your Wi‑Fi does? In most houses, Wi‑Fi is the one universal layer—no one asks what brand your phone is before it connects. But smart homes still live in a messy middle: different protocols (Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth), proprietary hubs, and a higher barrier to entry than it needs to be. In this video, I put the Homey Pro to the test to see if it can sit next to your Wi‑Fi router and act like a “smart home router” that unifies devices and automations. I added basically everything in my house into Homey Pro and then asked the real question: which hubs can I actually ditch? Some can’t go anywhere (like Ring and ecobee), but a lot of my Hue bulbs worked directly via Zigbee, and many SwitchBot devices came in over Bluetooth—though my roller shades still needed the SwitchBot hub for Homey integration. Homey Pro also acts as a Matter controller and Thread border router, which makes it interesting if you want Homey on the backend and Apple Home as the front-end UI. The biggest value is automations. Homey’s Advanced Flows let me recreate one of my favorite nursery automations with cleaner, more visual logic than Apple Home. The catch: compatibility gaps (hello, GE Sync) and the reality that $400 mostly buys decluttering—not a magical “one hub to rule them all.”
