Your night light might already be one of the smartest devices in your house; it just doesn’t know it yet. In this video, I’m looking at the Third Reality Smart Night Light (Matter over Thread) and why a simple night light might actually be the most logical smart home upgrade. From motion sensing and automation to Thread mesh networking and RGB notifications, this “smart dumb thing” turns a familiar device into a surprisingly powerful part of a smart home. About This Video

How do you hide a motion sensor in plain sight? You make it look like something we’ve all been used to for decades: a night light. In this video I test the Third Reality Smart Night Light (the Matter over Thread version—the one with the “T”) and explain why this “smart dumb thing” might be one of the most logical upgrades you can make. It’s basically a motion sensor + light sensor + RGB light that just happens to live in an outlet where it looks totally normal. I walk through five reasons I want it in my house. First, it keeps a totally local routine (motion + <20 lux = light on, then off after motion stops), and I show how I disable that pinhole routine and recreate it as a more dialed-in automation—like using a 30-second timer so it doesn’t stay on forever if you’re sitting still. Second, the outlet placement is a naturally hardwired spot for motion sensing without ugly wall mounts and cables. Third, it’s Thread, which means it can pull double duty as a Thread mesh extender while you’re using it as a sensor. Then I get into why Homey Pro is especially interesting here (way more automation “cards” than Apple Home) and how the RGB can become a notification light—like a bathroom occupied indicator. I also cover the downsides: hidden local automations can conflict with your smart home rules, I managed to break the local routine by doing too much in Homey, and I really wish this had been a millimeter wave presence sensor.
