The Lodern Kit by Swiss Tech is designed around firemaking, but can it actually make fire? Thanks for watching.

About This Video
In this video I’m checking out the Swiss Tech Lodern Kit from Walmart, which is basically a “campfire essentials” pouch built around fire making. It’s just under $30 and comes with a fixed blade knife, a pocket bellows, a flint wheel sparker with tinder storage, a magnesium/ferro combo block, and a little “tinder scraper” that honestly looks like a tiny cheese grater. I go through each component up close, weigh the full kit (13.6 oz with everything in the pouch), then take it outside and actually try to make fire with the included tools.
Out in the real world, wind became the big problem—especially with magnesium shavings. The grater actually makes decent sawdust-style tinder if you can stay out of the wind, but Swiss Tech really should’ve included a proper scraper for the magnesium/ferro setup because the knife spine isn’t ideal and I don’t love using the blade edge for that. The flint wheel sparker does make sparks, but I’m not a fan of their dense tinder sticks—they’re fiddly and don’t want to light unless you work them open.
My takeaway: the pouch is cool, the knife is fine, the bellows works, but if you want a practical fire kit, keep it basic—Bic lighter, a real ferro rod with a scraper, and a tin of cotton balls (even better with Vaseline). Give yourself the best chance to get a fire going instead of messing with gimmicky stuff.
