About This Video
I just put a TRD skid plate on my 2025 SR5 Tacoma, and in this video I walk you through how I installed it and what to watch out for. The 4th gen Tacomas (unless you’re in something like a TRD Pro or Trailhunter) basically come with a splash guard that’s pretty laughable—flimsy and not really doing much besides maybe keeping some wetness and small debris out. I found the TRD skid plate for a good price, wanted the extra protection, and honestly it looks pretty awesome too.
The big thing for SR/SR5/TRD Sport/Limited trims is you don’t have the front crossmember piece needed to mount the front of the skid plate. So I added a front crossmember (I used one from RCI) and grabbed two extra OEM Toyota splash guard bolts for the front mounts. I show the order that made it easiest: install the crossmember by sandwiching it between the tow hooks and frame (don’t fully tighten yet), start the rear/side bolts first, use the skid plate’s center jack point to lift it into place, then line up the crossmember and finish everything off. I also talk torque specs (75 ft-lbs for the tie-down/tow hook bolts, about 27 ft-lbs for the skid plate bolts) and a couple annoyances like avoiding cross-threading and not forcing bolts that feel like they’re going to strip.
