Lately I’ve been on a Bowie knife kick, and I wanted something that hits that old-school vibe—wood handles, brass bolsters, and a leather sheath. In this video I take a quick look at the Mossy Oak Bowie Knife that’s usually listed on Amazon for under $20. Great Star Tools sent it out to me for review, and honestly for the price I was hoping it would scratch that itch without being a total gimmick. I go over what you’re actually getting: an 8 1/2 inch blade in 3Cr13 steel and a leather sheath that’s a bit thin, but has good retention and carries well on the hip. I check sharpness out of the box (it came surprisingly sharp), then I do some backyard testing—chopping into a thick piece of wood and beating on an old rotten stump just to see what happens. After that, I do a paper test to see if the edge held up, and it still cut well enough to call it a pass. My takeaway: for less than $20, it’s a pretty awesome package and it does deliver that classic Bowie look. My main complaint is comfort—after a while, that wood handle transfers a lot of shock into your hand when you’re chopping, and it can start to hurt your fingers.
