About This Video

Since I already did a video covering all the problems I’ve had with my 2011 Hyundai Sonata, I figured it was only fair to do the other side of it—what I actually like about the car. Even though these are pretty notorious for engine failures, I haven’t had any issues with the engine or transmission. I’m convinced a lot of that comes down to keeping up with maintenance, especially checking and changing the oil. Mine’s also sitting at relatively low miles for its age (about 96,000), so that may be part of it too. As far as how it drives, once I worked through the kinks, it’s been a solid daily. It feels decently quick getting up to speed (the 2.4L is 198 hp and roughly 0–60 in the 7–8 second range), and I like the handling on back roads and twisty mountain roads. The steering is surprisingly heavy for electronic steering, but you get used to whatever you drive. I also really like the interior space—plenty of room up front—and the trunk is huge with fold-down seats for longer items. The 18.5-gallon tank is another big plus; I average around 27 mpg, which works out to about a 500-mile range on a full tank. That said, even with the positives, I still wouldn’t really recommend buying one unless it’s low miles, because the amount of work mine needed before 100k just isn’t a great look compared to something like my Camry.
