Recently I set up a really simplistic planted tank as a bit of an experiment, and it completely made me rethink how I’ve been doing things. For years I’ve been obsessed with substrate systems—soil, caps, the whole lot—like it’s the be all and end all. But I had a tank with my usual “great” substrate that started to dwindle, and the fix wasn’t changing the substrate at all… it was me actually fertilizing properly. Not once a month on a top-up, but regularly—once a week. I’m never going to be an “every day dosing” guy, but weekly (we literally set Monday as fertilizing day) made the plants take off with some of the best health I’ve seen in a while. So in this video I kick off a proper no-substrate (or basically no-nutrient-substrate) style build: hardscape first, then a super thin dusting of sand/gravel just for the look and to anchor epiphytes. I go for an oversized island composition in a deep 360L tank, glue the wood down properly (paper towel + liquid super glue trick), and then build that “pebbly detail goodness” foreground that’s a bit of me. The big takeaway: substrate helps, sure, but if your nutrients are covered (iron, potassium, magnesium etc.) and you’ve got fish producing waste, plants can thrive with sand/gravel—opening up cleaner, simpler, more “arty” planted tanks that are easy to maintain.
