I turned up thinking I was going to build two tanks… and then Dave hit me with, “You’re doing three.” So we set a timer for 10 hours and I had to go into full focus mode, because normally what you see in a 20-minute aquascape video is easily 30–40 hours of actual building, filming, and editing. Today was all about making three different, replicable scapes that people can look at in the shop and think, “Yeah, I can give that a go.” I started by sorting the substrate systems first, and I went different on each tank. One was straight-up CO2 “cheating (the right way)” with ADA Amazonia, height at the back, and even some volcanic rock underneath to lock the structure in and give bacteria loads of surface area. The second got a nutribase layer, root tabs, and a sand cap for a clean canvas before it becomes a proper jungle. The third was a classic soil-to-sand transition using an overlap method so the rocks can act like a retaining wall without gaps. Then it was hardscape: a quick, 15-minute-ish Iwagumi-style rock layout (no rules… except apparently no wood), plus an oversized wood composition because big pieces give instant impact. The big takeaway: get the structure and height right, stabilize anything that’ll shift when water goes in, and let the plants do the heavy lifting.
