This is the final episode of the home discus aquarium build, and it’s one of those days where it’s “discus day”… but we’ve also got to fix the ugly reality of an island tank that wasn’t designed to be an island tank. So before any fish moving happens, me and Steph finally sort the back panel gaps so the cabinet looks clean when the sofa’s up against it—proper little MDIY moment, cutting panels down and screwing them from the inside so you don’t see any fixings. Then it’s go-time. We head out, do the whole “big saggy bucket” mission, and I’m properly overthinking it like I always do—temperature, oxygen, travel time, the lot. We even get a surprise spawn from the keyhole cichlids (their keyholes were showing and they were being super parental), so I quickly pull fish out to give the eggs a fighting chance. Back home, we make a classic boo boo and forget nets, so we do the least-stress option: check temperature matches, pour off water, and get the discus straight in. The takeaway? A calmer light and a mature, stable tank makes a massive difference. The discus don’t just hide—they start settling, breathing slows, and the quickest “are we good?” test is simple: feed them. If they eat, you’re winning.
