About This Video

In this video I’m showing you my other vinyl setup—kind of my “main” one—because it’s the more expensive rig and I spend more time with it. The funny part is that almost all of the money went into the turntable. I’ve got a basement in my new apartment now, so I run one setup upstairs and one downstairs (and yes, if I had space in my office and bathroom I’d probably build more… my girlfriend would not be impressed). I break down each piece and what I paid used: a Zenith MC730 receiver from the early ’80s for $10 CAD, Acoustic Research AR 70LS speakers for $25 CAD, and the big ticket item—a Technics SL-1200MK5 for $400 CAD. The Zenith needed a proper DeoxIT treatment and a bulb swap, but it sounds great for the money. The AR speakers are a bit of a mystery model-wise (if you know anything about the 70LS, tell me), but the sound is super clear and a big step up from cheap used floorstanders. And the SL-1200MK5? It’s a DJ workhorse, basically unkillable, and I’ll tell you why bringing a knowledgeable friend to inspect a used 1200 is a very good idea.
