In this video I’m back in spring 2019, when I traveled through South America and carved out time to do what I always do in a new city: dig for records. I’m in Lima, Peru—specifically Miraflores—checking out a couple of shops that really made an impression on me. It’s a “better late than never” upload (life happened), but the record hunting is timeless. At Vinilos, I chat with someone from the shop about why you’d open a record store in 2016–2018, and the answer is exactly what I love hearing: passion for music and a desire to “rescue” albums that only exist on vinyl—stuff you’re not finding on MP3, CD, or streaming. They talk about how vinyl never really died and how it’s been reborn in Peru, with customers ranging from teens using their parents’ tips money all the way up to older collectors. The big takeaway: the selection is intentionally wide—classic rock, pop, new wave, post-punk, Peruvian and Mexican music, even classical—and it’s a mix of old records and new pressings, because each format fills gaps the other can’t.
