When Caleb and I quit our jobs to travel the world for a year, we promised ourselves we’d experience as much as possible in every country. So in Thailand, we went all-in on accommodations and booked three of the most unique Airbnbs we could find—then filmed what it’s actually like to stay in them (the weird, the wonderful, and the stuff you don’t think about until you’re there). First up was a traditional canal house in Bangkok—right on the water, with Kong boats going by (still my favorite way to get around the city). We expected bare bones, but it totally exceeded our expectations: AC, Wi‑Fi, hot water, a massive bathroom, and the host family even cooked us breakfast. Then we headed to Chiang Rai for an “earth home” that’s literally made of clay, covered in hand-painted astrology and galaxy murals, and has the most intense “death stairs” to the loft. Finally, we ended in Bangkok in a legit childhood-style treehouse—small, cozy, and located inside a courtyard complex with a coffee shop, restaurant, peacocks, and a fish pond where the fish swarm the second you walk up. Our biggest takeaway: unique stays don’t just give you a bed—they push you into neighborhoods and experiences you wouldn’t have found otherwise, even with a tight time and budget.
