About This Video

If you’re anything like us, Thailand’s night markets are basically impossible to ignore—some of them are so massive they host tens of thousands of stalls and hundreds of thousands of people. So we tested the night market scene ourselves by visiting three spots across Thailand and comparing them on food, price, and overall vibe: Chiang Mai’s Sunday Night Market, a “maybe” night market situation in Koh Tao, and Bangkok’s legendary Chatuchak Weekend Market. In Chiang Mai, we showed up right at 5pm (opening time) and it was already packed. We went straight into food mode—tried dyed buns (the chicken was the move), samosas fried to order, and yes… we ate a scorpion. It tasted fine, but the texture was the weird part (think biting into a crab claw shell). We also tried fried milk with condensed milk on top, which was way more of a texture win than a flavor bomb. Koh Tao was our mystery stop: the internet said there were night markets, but what we found felt more like a walking street with permanent shops and a few carts. In Bangkok, Chatuchak felt like a maze, and we made it our mission to find postcards (spoiler: Koh Tao’s paint-your-own postcard won) and finally try durian—pungent, oniony, and somehow both gross and… kind of good.
