We did a self-guided food tour through Osaka, Japan’s street food capital, and tried 7 of the city’s most famous dishes, all on a budget! From sizzling okonomiyaki to flaming tuna at Izakaya Toyo, we set out to eat our way through Dotonbori without breaking the bank. We’re Lindsey and Caleb, and starting January 2025, we decided to quit our jobs, pack as much as we could into a few carry ons, and travel around the world. Join us as we take on adventures like staying in Thailand’s most unique accommodations, trekking to Everest base camp, and motorcycling the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam. Our self-guided Osaka food tour took us through the city’s most iconic eats — all without booking a guide or breaking our $100/day budget. We started with rich tonkotsu ramen from Kinryu, flipped okonomiyaki at Fukutaro, and watched the legendary Izakaya Toyo flame-sear tuna right in front of us. From classic takoyaki and crispy kushikatsu to taiyaki filled with sweet red bean and Rikuro’s famous jiggly cheesecake, Osaka truly lived up to its nickname: Japan’s kitchen. Every stop gave us a taste of why this city is a food lover’s paradise. #Osaka #JapanFoodTour #JapaneseStreetFood #OsakaFood #Dotonbori #IzakayaToyo #Okonomiyaki #Takoyaki #RikurosCheesecake #Kushikatsu #Taiyaki #TonkotsuRamen #TravelVlog #JapanTravel #FoodVlog

About This Video

We made it to Japan, and if there’s one thing we love doing when we travel, it’s trying the local food. The only problem? Japanese food can get expensive fast—and we’re doing this trip on a $100/day budget. So in this video we do a self-guided street food tour through Osaka (aka “the nation’s kitchen”) and try to hit the most famous, most unique bites without blowing our budget. We start the day with a ramen spot that basically has a simplified menu (our favorite sign) and a line that moves pretty quickly thanks to the vending machine ticket system. Then we try okonomiyaki for the first time—served right on a little hibachi grill with the tiny spatula—and it fully confirms our stance: we’re not pancake people… unless it’s savory. After that, we go to Izakaya Toyo for the blowtorch tuna cheek show (hands, no gloves, bucket of water… absolute chaos) and it’s as fun to watch as it is to eat. Then we head back to Dotonbori to hunt street food: takoyaki that’s literally lava inside, kushi katsu (deep-fried skewers with sauce you need to absolutely drench), and taiyaki where the red bean wins for us. We finish with the grand finale: fluffy cheesecake… which, yes, is controversial in our household.
