About This Video

We took a weekend trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and turned the biggest question into a full-on race: train vs bus. Flying was out (we’re sticking to our $100/day budget), so Caleb took the overnight sleeper bus and I (Lindsey) took the overnight train. We compared everything that actually matters when you’re traveling overnight—price, amenities, privacy, comfort, sleep quality, vibe—and the finish line was Top Gate in the old city. Getting there was half the adventure. I grabbed a Grab to the railway station because I was nervous about timing and traveling solo, while Caleb went full public transportation through Bangkok (canal boat + BTS during rush hour) to the massive bus station that “wants you to get lost a little bit.” On the bus, Caleb got snacks (including the legendary “green nut”), a curtain for privacy, and a bed setup—but the ride was so bumpy he basically didn’t sleep at all. On the train, I had outlets, a personal light, curtains, and a surprisingly comfy setup that let me sleep great. Results: the bus won speed (by a landslide) and price, plus amenities thanks to the food. The train swept privacy, comfort, and sleep—and even though the score tied 3–3, we gave the overall win to the train for vibe and experience… so that’s what we took back to Bangkok.
