About This Video

We took on one of the most iconic open-water challenges in San Francisco: the swim from Alcatraz to shore—and Caleb did it without a wetsuit. In this video, we’re not pretending we “escaped” a prison… we’re showing what it actually feels like to jump into cold, murky bay water with zero open-water experience and a whole lot of nerves. We met up with Coach Christina and Captain Laura from Odyssey Open Water, learned the logistics (permits, Coast Guard clearance, boat traffic), and then it was time to get in and figure it out in real time. For Caleb, this wasn’t just a stunt—it was a comeback. Growing up, swimming was his life, and it played a huge role in his recovery and development after a life-threatening heart defect and emergency surgery as a newborn. Out there, the hardest parts weren’t just the cold and distance (about 2 miles)—it was swimming straight without lane lines, sighting, breathing without swallowing bay water, and managing the moment hypothermia started creeping in (stiff hands, numb feet). The biggest takeaway: open water is a different skill set, and having experienced support makes all the difference. Making it to shore felt like relief, pride, and the perfect send-off before we leave San Francisco to travel the world.
