Hi! We're Lindsey and Caleb, and starting January 2025, we decided to quit our jobs, pack as much as we could into a few carry ons, and travel around the world. Join us as we take on adventures like staying in Thailand's most unique accommodations, trekking to Everest base camp, and motorcycling the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam. Our journey through Southeast Asia's most popular backpacker route revealed the authentic experiences that make this region so special for travelers on any budget. In the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, we searched for Banana Pancakes before diving into Laos' sobering history at the UXO Museum, where we learned about the country's ongoing struggle with unexploded ordnance. As day turned to evening, we joined travelers from around the world climbing the 328 steps of Mount Phousi for a breathtaking sunset over the Mekong River. Vientiane, Laos' laid-back capital, offered a perfect mix of cultural highlights and unexpected surprises. We explored the impressive Patuxai Victory Monument (often called Laos' Arc de Triomphe) before venturing to the eccentric Buddha Park filled with over 200 bizarre Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. The night market's carnival atmosphere and impromptu amusement park rides gave us a taste of local nightlife before continuing our journey. Our final stop in Siem Reap began with natural drama - our planned Angkor Wat sunrise coincided perfectly with a spectacular monsoon thunderstorm! Soaking wet but embracing the adventure, we explored the ancient temples through sheets of rain before discovering one of Siem Reap's hidden gems - the APOPO visitor center. Here, we met the incredible hero rats trained to detect landmines, learning about Cambodia's ongoing work to clear dangerous unexploded ordnance. We capped our journey with the remarkable talents of Phare Circus performers, where local artists tell Cambodia's cultural stories through spectacular acrobatics and theater. #BackpackerTrail #BackpackingSoutheastAsia #LuangPrabang #Vientiane #SiemReap #APOPO #HeroRats #AngkorWat #BudgetTravel #LaosTravel #CambodiaTravel #TravelVlog #BackpackerLife

About This Video

In this video, we decided to stay on the beaten path and finally see what the legendary “Banana Pancake Trail” is all about. It’s not an official trail (there’s no map and no guide), but it is a super popular budget backpacker route through Southeast Asia—so we spent two weeks traveling a small segment through Laos and Cambodia. We kicked things off in Luang Prabang with banana pancakes (yes, we committed to the bit… even though neither of us really likes pancakes) and then got hit with the heavy stuff at UXO Lao, learning how Laos became the most bombed country in the world and what unexploded ordnance still means for people today. From there we chased sunset views up Mount Phousi (including a quick wardrobe change because we didn’t want to be disrespectful), found a sketchy-cool little cave, and then rolled into Vientiane for Victory Monument, Buddha Park, and a night market that was also randomly an amusement park—14 minutes of bumper cars for about 75 cents each is honestly insane. We wrapped the trail in Siem Reap with a thunderstorm-soaked Angkor Wat sunrise attempt (I was thriving; Caleb was just trying to keep the camera alive), banana pancakes round three, and one of our favorite surprises of the whole trip: meeting APOPO’s hero rats that detect landmines. And if you’re in Cambodia… the circus show we saw was way more than a circus. Just go.
