We attempted the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam the way we wanted to do it: no guides, no tour group—just us, a Honda 150, and a whole lot of “let’s see how this goes.” Over 5 days we rode 500+ km through towering limestone mountains, remote villages, slick roads, and fog so thick we were basically guessing what was 50–100 feet ahead. Day one started in heavy rain with a visor that definitely wasn’t transparent anymore, a tour bus off the road, and our first big reminder that this route is not for beginners. We also hit the thing we’d been dreading: a traffic police checkpoint. We had our motorcycle endorsements and international driver permits, but we’d heard enough stories about US IDPs not being accepted that we were fully bracing for a fine. Luckily, it was a total breeze. From there it was steep passes, gravel patches that can ruin your day, and a lot of slow, careful riding—especially with two people and bags. The biggest takeaway: the Ha Giang Loop is absolutely worth it, but it’s serious. The fog made it moodier and more adventurous (and more stressful), and our favorite day ended up being when we got a little off the beaten path toward Du Gia—quieter towns, fewer tourists, and views that honestly didn’t feel real. We made it back to Ha Giang just in time for our sleeper bus to Hanoi… muddy, soaked, and very proud of ourselves.
