Known as the "Venice of India," Kerala's backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, and lakes that create one of the world's most peaceful travel experiences. We spent an unforgettable 24 hours aboard a traditional luxury houseboat, complete with two experienced captains who guided us through this serene ecosystem and a talented private chef who prepared some of the most incredible meals of our entire journey. In this India travel vlog, we started our journey in Alappuzha, give a houseboat tour, and eat delicious Indian food, and experience a wonderful Alleppey houseboat. The culinary experience alone was worth the trip - our chef created three exceptional meals using the freshest local ingredients. Lunch featured Kerala food specialties like Kerala rice, bitter gourd (locally called kerala), fresh grilled fish, tomato coconut curry, cabbage salad, and green beans. Mid-afternoon brought fresh fruit, fried banana, and aromatic masala chai. For dinner, we enjoyed more Indian food of pan-fried okra, dal fry, chicken tikka, and the highlight - fresh fish cooked in banana leaf with amazing spices, all served with roti. The dinner experience became unexpectedly entertaining when a sudden monsoon rolled in, creating more of a comedy show than drama as we all scrambled to deploy the rain covers. By morning, the skies had cleared, revealing the backwaters in all their serene glory for our final Kerala tour and another incredible breakfast. This luxury houseboat experience offers a rare glimpse into traditional Alappuzha houseboat life while providing modern comfort. #KeralaBackwaters #LuxuryHouseboat #VeniceOfIndia #SlowTravel #KeralaFood #TraditionalKerala #Monsoon #BackwatersCruise #TravelVlog #IndiaTravel #RelaxingTravel

About This Video

We’re in Kerala, India, and for the next 24 hours a luxury houseboat is our home—two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two captains, and a private chef… for just the two of us. We took a 2-hour taxi from Kochi down to Alappuzha, got a warm welcome (and snacks), and then drifted straight into what people call the “Venice of India.” The backwaters were so calm and peaceful, and honestly it was such a contrast to the bustling, chaotic image we had in our heads of India—this felt like a completely different side of the country. We did a full boat tour, ate an unreal amount of food (Kerala rice, coconut curry, fish, veggies, fried bananas, and a dinner that had us questioning how we still had room), and even got talked into a little fish-eye “delicacy” moment. Caleb called lunch not just one of the best meals he’s had in India, but one of the best meals he’s had, period. Then we got a quick tropical crash course—banana flower for curries, mango trees, cashew trees—watched the sunset, and got absolutely monsooned out of nowhere. The crew deployed rain covers in under a minute like it was nothing. We slept great, had one last epic breakfast, and somehow docking at 9:00 AM still felt way too soon.
