About This Video

A lot of you keep asking what my practice routine is, so here it is: I’m all about short, focused sessions. I don’t do the “practice for 4 hours straight” thing anymore—when I was younger I did, and for me it actually became detrimental. These days I’ll hit 30 to 60 minutes, but it’s structured on purpose. No mindless noodling, no running scales just to feel busy—there’s always a main target. I rotate the focus like a gym split. Day one might be strict alternate picking only. Day two could be sight reading/reading music. Day three might be legato only, or sweep picking, or economy picking. That rotation gives your hands time to digest the work, recover, and adapt—plus it keeps you from getting insanely good at one technique while everything else falls apart. If you only grind alternate picking for two weeks, your sweeps, legato, chords—whatever you’re neglecting—will absolutely suffer. Big takeaway: practice smarter, not longer. Take days off (I take a few days off a week), hydrate, get electrolytes, eat like an adult, stretch, and listen to your body. Focused practice beats two hours of random playing every time.
