About This Video

What’s up, dudes? In this quick lesson I’m tackling one of the most common things I hear as a teacher (and from the social media guitar world): “My scales don’t sound melodic
they just sound like scales.” The problem usually isn’t the scale itself—it’s that you’re not sure how to use it musically. So I start where I always start: minor pentatonic. If you don’t know all five positions, go learn those. I’m serious. Swear to God. From there, I show you how to stop running the whole “box” and start playing broken patterns—like focusing on just two strings (D and G, for example). Then you spice it up with technique, feel, and rhythm choices (quarter notes, half notes, etc.). The big takeaway: the answer isn’t playing more notes—it’s tastefully placing the notes. Once your ear is locked into pentatonic as the foundation, you can add the “extra” notes from the full minor scale (the two missing ones) as flavor, then resolve back into pentatonic. That little surprise is what makes it sound melodic, and I’ll even hint at how I use arpeggios in the same mindset. Give it a try.
