About This Video

In this video I’m taking a ā€œbasicā€ blues line and making it way less basic with one tiny move: a semitone slide. I’m in the key of Bā™, and I’m thinking classic 1–4–5. The trick is sliding in from a half-step behind—A to B♭—then grabbing the 5th to lock the sound in. It’s simple, but if you’ve never done it before it instantly gives you that slick, greasy blues vibe without needing a million notes. What I’m really doing is outlining triads built out of that minor pentatonic area and then leaning into major pentatonic too. That clash/shift is where the magic is—it creates a dominant 7 flavor without me having to spell out some giant chord shape. I show what my right hand is doing (I’m basically popping the notes), and I talk through how you can comp it with 7th chords or 9th chords—totally your call. If you want to get fancier, you can outline the dominant 7 of each chord, or mess with little walking patterns and different endings by sliding up or down. It’s all about variations you can steal and plug into your own blues playing right now.
