In this livestream, I basically do what I always tell you to do… and what I definitely did NOT do before hitting “Go Live”: warm up. My hands were stiff, I hadn’t practiced yet (big no-no), so I start light and boring on purpose—simple patterns, dominant 7 arpeggios (and me trying not to accidentally turn them into diminished), and little right-hand checks to get the engine running. While I’m doing that, I’m hanging with you guys in chat, talking gear, pickups, rigs, and why I’m not taking on a bunch of guitar reviews right now even when companies offer them. Once I’m warmed up enough, we jump into jam-along backing tracks and I try not to embarrass myself too hard. I mess with a cleaner, lower-gain tone for better touch response, tweak the reverb depending on the vibe, and we bounce through funk, soft rock ballad stuff, “Sexy Midnight” smooth-jazz-type tracks, Texas shuffle blues (where I admit I don’t live in straight blues as much), and a Dorian mode track. The big takeaway is how I think about improvising in real time: chord tones, dominant 7 outlines, mode choices like Dorian vs natural minor, and why theory + application together is what actually makes lead playing click.
