In this quick lesson I’m breaking down modal chord progressions—aka how to actually USE modes over the right chords. Last time we talked about building modes (parallel, straight from the intervals). This time it’s about pairing the mode with a progression that highlights the notes that make that mode sound like itself, not just “major scale starting somewhere else.” I also mention a guitar profile I made that you can download from my site for five bucks. It lays out all the modes for you and the chords you need for each one, all taught as parallel modes (that’s how I teach it, because it keeps everything in the same neighborhood on the neck). For example, I’ve got C Ionian with a 1-5-6-4 type vibe, and I’ve got C Lydian for that Satriani-ish sound. The big takeaway: don’t just shred modes over the backing—study the chords and identify the intervals you’re accenting. Like in Lydian, I’ll use a C chord with a D triad inversion over it (C in the bass) to punch that sharp 4. Or for Dorian, C minor 7 to F7 works because it accents the natural 6. That’s the “why it works” part.
