About This Video

In this quick lesson I’m showing you how everything’s interconnected on the fretboard, and why you should stop treating shapes like separate little islands. I start with the five minor pentatonic positions (yeah—learn all five… if you don’t, you’re missing out, man) and I point out how position one comes back around an octave higher. Once you see that loop, it’s way easier to stop “resetting” your brain every time you shift. Then I zoom in on what’s hiding inside each pentatonic box: intervals, arpeggios, and chords. In position one, you’ve got root, b3, 4, 5, b7, root—and if you grab root, b3, 5, b7, you’re technically playing a minor 7 arpeggio living inside that same shape. The pentatonic is basically that plus the 4 (aka the 11), which is why it sounds so good for rock/metal phrasing. From there I show how you can stack chord shapes (even some CAGED stuff… which I never do, but it’s there), play inversions like A minor, and even map 3-notes-per-string scale ideas in the same area. The takeaway: blend pentatonic with your major/Ionian or minor/Aeolian, track the intervals, and suddenly improv gets way easier because the whole neck connects.
