In this video I show you exactly how to change the aspect ratio in Final Cut Pro, step by step, using the 2026 workflow I’m using right now. I start by loading the project you want to update, then I go to the far right and click the button that looks like an equalizer. From there, the key is switching to the Project tab (next to the preview) instead of working from the file/timeline view, because that’s where Final Cut Pro lets you modify your project video settings. Once you’re in Project settings, I click Modify and then change the format depending on where I’m exporting. If you’re posting to TikTok, I show you how to go vertical. If you’re posting to Instagram, you can go square. And if you need something specific, I walk you through choosing Custom and entering your own dimensions (like 1200 x 1200) so your export matches exactly what the platform needs. After you change the aspect ratio, I also show you how to make your footage fill the preview properly. By clicking the file and using Transform, you can scale up and adjust X and Y to reposition your shot so it looks clean in the new frame.
