About This Video

I jumped on stream to “fix up” my current daily driver: the Desktop Try Balance 103—aka one of my favourite keyboards ever—because I love the sound and feel, but it’s still too deep for what I’m chasing. I’m using Echo Cilantro tactiles (sharp, de-bump tactile—yeah, I learned that’s my thing), a PC plate with flex cuts, and a whole lot of foam… and the problem is I still don’t have a truly successful clacky build in my collection. So the mission today was simple: make it clackier without ruining what already sounds good. I tested different foam configs live, talked through why flex-cut + foam matters on this board, and basically proved to myself that this keyboard is kind of designed to be foamed up. Pulling the case foam made it way too bouncy and started sounding hollow, so I put it back. Then I removed the plate foam/PE layers to push the pitch up—and it did get noticeably clackier, even if there’s still a bit of post-press hollowness. Also: yes, I got absolutely tilted by JST cables, and no, I don’t recommend newbies open certain boards (I broke my Aula F75 and I’d been in the hobby for two years).
