About This Video

That was not clickbait—this setup replaces iCloud storage for my iPhone using stuff you probably already have: a Mac or Windows PC plus an external drive. In the video I walk you through building a simple “home iCloud” using SMB file sharing, so you can privately save your iPhone photos, videos, and files to your own storage and save a boatload of money yearly. It’s not a full production NAS, but it’s something you can set up right now at home in minutes. I cover both Windows and macOS step-by-step. On Windows, I show you where to enable Network Discovery and File Sharing, how to find your real username/IP (Windows can be tricky), why a local user account is often the best move, and how to give that user full control permissions on the drive you’re sharing. On Mac, it’s even cleaner: turn on File Sharing, make sure SMB is enabled, and set the right user access. Then I show how to connect from iPhone using the Files app (SMB://), and how to manually drag-and-drop or “Save to Files” into your network drive. Finally, I get into the real-world limitations—automation isn’t as seamless as iCloud, and iOS aggressively kills background tasks—plus my workarounds using Shortcuts automations and the PhotoSync app.
