In this video I tested a full face of Black-owned makeup in honor of Black History Month, but also to see what actually shows up and performs on my dark skin—no fluff, just real application and real opinions. I used brands like Fenty Beauty, Danessa Myricks Beauty, Pat McGrath Labs, Juvia’s Place, and LYS Beauty, and I paid attention to the things that matter to me: pigmentation on deeper skin, blendability, how the complexion sits on texture, and whether it holds up on oily skin. For eyes, I went into the Pat McGrath Petalmorphosis palette (yes, one of the few I actually kept) and built a pink-and-green look with mostly shimmers and surprisingly low fallout. On complexion, I tried the Fenty Soft’Lit foundation in 445 again, and it reminded me why I’m not obsessed—on me it leans dewy and I can already see that “oil beard” situation trying to happen. I also tested Danessa’s liquid blurring balm setting spray to see if it could save the wear, but I still ended up needing powders to feel truly set. By the end, I break down what’s worth the hype (hello, Fenty cream blushes and my summer besties from Danessa) and what didn’t give me what I need (LYS concealer brightness and the way some powders emphasized texture).
